Forty children
accompanied by a multitude of parents, grandparents and scout leaders
participated in the highly successful Bird House Bonanza, a free
environmental education program that took place Saturday, Nov. 17, at the
new Lake Norman Volunteer Fire Department in Mooresville.
Material for the
birdhouses was provided by Lowe’s Home Improvement which co-sponsored
the event with Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists, a chapter of the
North Carolina Wildlife Federation. Chapter members created birdhouse kits
for easy assembly by participants.
Discussions on
cavity-nesting birds and creating a wildlife habitat were led by Marek
Smith of the
Mecklenburg
County
Park
and Recreation Department and LNWC volunteer Theresa Moor. Homemade
cookies were baked and served by volunteer Sara Scherr.
